After the Peek Performance event brought the incredible Mac Studio and Studio Display, things have gone quiet on the Apple front. But that’s just the calm before the next big things. Apple has launched a slew of new products for the rest of 2022, making the Peek Performance event seem like a mere appetizer. Here’s everything Apple expects to release in the second half of 2022.
Already released
- iPhone SE (3rd generation)
- iPad Air (5th generation)
- Mac Studio (1st gen)
- studio ad
- M2 MacBook Air
- M2 13 inch MacBook Pro
New Macs
Apple announced in June 2020 that it would switch all of its Macs from Intel processors to its own silicon within two years. Apple has already updated many of its devices, including the MacBook Air, Mac mini, 24-inch iMac, 13-inch MacBook Pro, 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro, and the new Mac Studio introduced. Apple also introduced the M2 chip in the MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro at WWDC in June 2022. Read everything you need to know about the M2.
With that, the following Macs still need an Apple silicon update. And don’t forget that Fall 2022 will also bring an update to macOS that could bring new features geared specifically towards the latest Macs. Here’s what we’re expecting later this year.
Mac Pro
The Apple Silicon Mac Pro is said to be working with a 32-core CPU and up to 128-core GPU, which could be possible if Apple combines four M1 Max in one machine, with rumors that this chip might be known as M1 Extreme.
We were surprised that Apple didn’t show a professionally-oriented Mac Pro with M-series chips at WWDC. Instead, the company introduced the M2 chip in the consumer-oriented MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro. This begs the question, will the Mac Pro use an M1 series chip or will it jump straight to the M2 series at launch? Read more here: The next Mac Pro: Everything we know.
When? October 2022
Mac mini
In a December 2021 Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman pointed out that there will be two new Mac minis in 2022. Apple is said to be working on a new Mac mini with M1 Pro that will replace the Intel-powered Mac mini model Apple stayed in line. It is suspected that this “more powerful version of the Mac mini” could contain the same chip as the new MacBook Pro – presumably the M1 Pro – according to a Bloomberg report.
The only question here is will Apple launch a new M1 Pro Mac mini after unveiling the M2 MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro, or will it move that rumored Mac mini to the M2 Pro. Also, an M2 Mac mini is certainly to be expected after the M2 MacBook Air and M2 MacBook Pro appear on the scene. Read more about the M2 Mac mini.
When? October 2022
New iPads
We got a peek at iPadOS 16 at WWDC (read what could be coming in iPadOS 16). Here’s the new hardware we’re expecting along with the OS update this fall:
iPad Pro
Rumors suggest that we can expect a new iPad Pro with an updated design and wireless charging support. Since the current iPad Pro has an M1 chip, we expect the new model to get an M2. In addition, MagSafe support for the iPad is also said to be in the works, with reverse charging to power other devices through the iPad.
When? October 2022
10.2-inch iPad (10th generation)
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman points out that we can also expect the usual update to the new standard iPad in 2022, with the same design and a new chip, before a redesign arrives in 2023.
When? October 2022
New iPhone
We know what to expect from iOS 16 when it arrives in September 2022 after Apple revealed the top-line features in iOS 16. It goes without saying that we will also see an iPhone 14 in September, again with four models.
iPhone 14
There are already rumors about the iPhone 13 successor. We hear that there will be no more iPhone mini. Instead there will be a larger non-Pro iPhone to match the Pro Max. Still, the Pro model is expected to get the biggest changes, with a new Notches screen, a 48-megapixel camera, and a faster chip. Read more in our roundup of iPhone 14 rumors. Read our iPhone 14 guide.
When: September 2022
New Apple Watch
There could be more than one new Apple Watch in 2022.
Apple Watch Series 8
After a somewhat disappointing Series 7, all eyes will be on the Apple Watch Series 8 when it arrives this fall. Rumors suggest there could be a new larger size this year, as well as a ‘rugged’ option, and possibly the rumored redesign we didn’t get last year. We could also get a new skin temperature sensor, but it’s not entirely clear what it can actually do.
When: September 2022
Apple Watch SE 2
After skipping a year, the Apple Watch SE is set to receive an update in 2022 that will likely bring an always-on display, an ECG sensor, and fast charging. We were also hoping for a lower price, but the latest rumors are that the price will actually go up. Read Apple Watch SE 2 (2022): Everything You Need to Know.
When: September 2022
New AirPods
Apple’s AirPods are among the most popular devices, but also among the most neglected. But we’re finally expecting a big update this year.
AirPods Pro
Apple hasn’t updated the AirPods Pro, one of its most popular products, since they arrived in October 2019. That means they need some attention. We’re expecting a new stemless design with some high-end fitness and audio features, possibly even the introduction of lossless audio. Read more about the AirPods Pro 2022 here.
When? Fall 2022
New categories
If Apple never innovated away from the products it currently makes, it could lag behind with technological advances. No wonder, then, that the company is working on various new areas. We’re not necessarily expecting these to land in 2022, but rumors suggest some of them could still arrive.
HomePod with screen
That may not arrive in 2022, but we’re hoping there’s some truth to the rumors that Apple is working on a HomePod with a screen. We’ve always said that a screen would make HomePod infinitely easier to use, but maybe we’re the only ones who hate having to talk to our speaker.
A screen would expand HomePod’s use beyond audio into visual – so you could watch podcasts and news reports and YouTube videos, but communicate most usefully via FaceTime.

When? Possibly 2022, but probably 2023
AR glasses
Apple has revealed its interest in augmented reality, and we may learn more about its plans to make AR glasses. The rumors suggest that we could see Apple’s AR Mixed Reality product by the end of 2022. Apple may show off the device but wait until 2023 to launch it.
Maybe Apple will finally show something at WWDC to get developers to design apps for the new device, but that’s pretty far fetched.
When? 2023
Small/cheap Apple TV
There could be a smaller and cheaper Apple TV in the works at Apple. A tweet from Ming-Chi Kuo’s unverified account in May 2022 claimed that Apple plans to release a new version of the Apple TV that will “improve the cost structure” in the second half of this year. Read more here: A cheaper Apple TV could arrive in time for the holidays.
When? Possibly Fall 2022
game console
There are even rumors that Apple may have plans to release a gaming console – or at least an Apple TV with enhanced gaming credentials. Take a look at Apple gaming console rumors.
When? Possibly Fall 2022
