iOS 16 Mail App: Improved Search, Undo Send, Scheduled Send, Reminders and More – MacRumors | Hot Mobile Press

With iOS 16 and iPadOS 16, Apple added a number of improvements to the Mail app to bring it in line with competing email apps. The Mail app includes search updates, an option to undo sending and tools to get reminders about emails you need to track, and more.

This guide covers everything you need to know about the Mail app in ‘iOS 16’, with these features coming in September when ‘iOS 16’ is revealed to the public.

Searching in the Mail app has been improved, and you’ll now see a wider range of suggestions when you start typing a search term. You’ll see more relevant email messages, and Apple also says Search corrects typos and uses synonyms for search terms.

It doesn’t differ much from iOS 15’s search function, but it makes the search faster, more accurate, and more intuitive to use.

Improved search is available for all users while typo correction is available in English (Australia, Canada, India, Singapore, United Kingdom and United States).

Undo Send

After sending an email in “iOS 16” or “iPadOS 16”, you have 10 seconds to cancel the email if you make a mistake. 10 seconds is shorter than the time other email apps like Gmail give you (30 seconds), but it’s better than no opt-out option at all.

Once you’ve sent an email in ‘iOS 16’, you’ll see an ‘Undo Send’ button at the bottom of the Mail app interface. You must tap on it within 10 seconds to undo sending the email, which will take you back to the compose interface. From there you can correct your mistake and resend the email or delete it entirely.

Planned shipping

When you are ready to send an email you have written, you can set a time for sending, which is a new feature in ‘iOS 16’. To do this, long-press the send icon (the blue arrow) and then select an option.

Apple has preset options like Send Now, Send Tonight at 9pm, and Send Tomorrow at 8am. If these preset times don’t work for you, you can tap “Send later…” and choose any date or time.

Before it’s sent, the email is listed in a Send Later mailbox, listed under options like Starred and Unread. You can tap on this email inbox to see the messages you have scheduled and what time they are scheduled for.

Email Reminders

If you’ve opened an email and don’t have time to reply to it, you can let the Mail app remind you to come back to it later. Apple allows you to choose a date and time for messages to reappear in your inbox so nothing is lost.

To use the Remind Me feature, tap the Reply button on any email in your inbox. From there, scroll down to “Remind me” and tap on it. Apple gives you preset options to be reminded in an hour, tonight, and tomorrow. You can also select the “Remind me later…” option, which allows you to set a specific date and time to get a reminder to reply.

When the reminder time expires, the Mail app moves the email to the top of your inbox with a “Remind me” label for you to respond.

Follow up

Apple has added a “Follow Up” feature, designed to move sent email messages to the top of your inbox so you can send a follow-up message if you don’t hear a reply from the person to you sent the email.

For certain emails in your inbox where you have indicated that you are waiting for a reply, you will see an option to “Follow”. Tapping it takes you to the compose interface with an email addressed to the person you’re waiting to hear from.

Notifications for missing recipients and attachments

If you mention an attachment or someone you want to include in an email in the body of the email and then forget to add that information, the Mail app will notify you.

This feature brings the Mail app in line with competing email services like Gmail, letting you know if you forget an attachment or want to add someone you meant to add to an email.

Links to websites, songs in Apple Music, and more appear as rich links instead of plain text in iOS 16. This means if someone sends you a link in the Mail app, you can preview the content right in the message without having to click the link.

Rich links for iOS 16 Mail app

Apple already uses rich links in apps like Messages, so the ‘iOS 16’ update brings the Mail app in line with Apple’s other apps.

Focus filter for mail

Apple added a new focus option called Filter in iOS 16. Filters are designed to allow users to filter out content in apps and view a specific email account or calendar if you have multiple. If you’re using a Focus with a filter set, the app with the filter only shows what you’ve selected and hides everything else.

For the Mail app, you can choose any mail account to associate with a Focus. When you’re in this focus, the Mail app shows only the accounts you select, with a filter set. Useful if, for example, you want to filter out private e-mails during work and vice versa.
