Brits app-tested: New Builder.ai data shows over 20 million can’t live without social media apps – PR Newswire | Hot Mobile Press

LONDON, July 20, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The average Brit uses just 10 of the 17 apps on their phone, according to a new study Builder.ai. Still, over a third (35%) say they couldn’t live without using social media apps like Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. The survey of 2,000 British adults reveals everything about Brits’ app habits, including:

  • The typical Brit has 17 apps on their phone, with 7% having over 50
  • On average, Brits use 10 apps regularly
  • Social media platforms are the most popular type of apps in the UK, with 35% of users saying they couldn’t live without them
  • A third (33%) of UK respondents now use mobile apps for business purposes
  • Over half (53%) of Brits say they would not pay for an app
  • Since the pandemic, 39% of Brits have started using apps for shopping, 27% for money management and 26% for healthcare
  • Three in ten (30%) downloaded a grocery delivery app for the first time during the pandemic

“This study shows how integrated apps are into every aspect of our lives. We use them to socialize, bank, shop, eat and do business,” explains Sachin Dev Duggal, co-founder and Chief Wizard of Builder.ai. “And that’s just the beginning – the future of apps knows no bounds. But there is this notion that apps are difficult to design and build – only for a select few with programming skills. And that perception limits creativity and prevents good app ideas from ever getting started. That’s why we launched Builder.ai, an AI-powered app development platform where anyone with an idea can build an app in record time. We want to make software development accessible to everyone.”

Builder.ai, a leading AI-powered low-code/no-code app development platform, commissioned the study to find out how people will interact with their apps in 2022. The study looks at everything from Brits’ app usage and favorite apps to their views on app development and the skills required to build an app.

While the average Brit uses 10 apps, almost a third (32%) say they use fewer than five, indicating developers need to create more apps to meet users’ increasing daily demands. Unsurprisingly, social media apps are the most popular type of app, with over a third (35%) of UK users saying they couldn’t live without them. However, among Gen Z respondents, that proportion continues to rise to nearly half (45%). Financial apps for everyday banking (34%) and entertainment apps like Netflix and Spotify (30%) are the second most popular categories. The latter, four in ten (40%) of 16-25 year olds, could not live without them.

As well as using apps for pleasure, the survey also revealed that a third (33%) of UK respondents now also use the apps on their phone for business purposes, showing a shift towards a more hybrid work life. This number rises to 51% for 16-24 year olds and 49% for 25-24 year olds.

The study also shows the extent to which COVID-19 has changed Brits’ app behaviour. Since the pandemic, Brits have been using apps for shopping (39%), money management (27%), healthcare (26%), work (15%) and education (13%). Additionally, 30% downloaded a meal delivery app for the first time during the pandemic.

While the ingrained use of apps in society is clear, surprisingly more than half (53%) of respondents said they would not pay for an app. However, the practice is far more common among younger respondents, with 26% of 16-24 year olds saying they would be willing to pay £2-5 for an app and 29% saying they would be happy to pay £5-5 would spend 10.

While 42% admit to not knowing how long it takes to develop an app, the average time respondents estimated was 18 months. Only 18% believed an app could be built in less than six months, while less than a quarter (23%) believed an app could be built with no coding skills. With the advent of no-code/low-code platforms like Builder.ai, entrepreneurs can now build, run and scale their app idea without any coding knowledge.
