Astonishinghas launched the rugged outdoor smartwatch T-Rex 2 in India.
- The watch is priced at £15,999 and comes in four color options.
- Here is my review of the
Amazfit T-Rex 2Smart watch that will help you to decide whether you should buy the smart watch or not.
Amazfit recently released its latest rugged outdoor smartwatch, the T-Rex 2, in India. It is the successor to the T-Rex and T-Rex Pro rugged smartwatches launched in India in 2020.
The T-Rex 2 promises to be a durable watch with a variety of features, but one of the highlights is the larger display compared to its predecessor, the T-Rex Pro. It has a water resistance of 10 ATM and can withstand extreme temperatures, which makes it a good companion even in difficult terrain.
That seems like a lot for a smartwatch that costs £15,999, but just relying on the features and specs on paper isn’t enough, so I’ve been testing the T-Rex 2 for the past few days. My in-depth review will help you decide if you should consider the Amazfit T-Rex 2 as your next fitness companion.
Amazfit T-Rex 2 price and availability
The Amazfit T-Rex 2 is priced at ₹15,999 and is available on Amazon India, Amazfit online store and Helios stores across the country. It comes in Astro Black and Gold, Desert Khaki, Ember Black, and Wild Green color options.
The company is currently offering a free £1,999 gym bag to users who order the smartwatch from its website.
Amazfit T-Rex 2 – Rugged design
Amazfit smartwatches usually have a sturdy design that makes them ideal for both indoor and outdoor scenarios. The T-Rex 2 is by no means a fashion accessory – nor is it meant to be – but it looks decent despite its sturdy avatar.
If you’re someone who doesn’t like rugged design and prefers a minimalist design like the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active, the T-Rex 2 isn’t the right choice for you. If you’re a fan of sporty watches like the G-Shock series, you’ll be a fan of the T-Rex 2.
The silicone straps are airy, lightweight and skin-friendly, allowing you to wear the watch for hours. Overall, the T-Rex 2 weighs 67 grams, which is good enough considering the display size, battery capacity, and included sensors.
It has two buttons on each side that allow you to quickly operate multiple functions of the watch. You won’t even touch the display once you get used to the interface. This is especially useful if you wear gloves or don’t want to touch the display.
If you’ve been paying attention to fitness-oriented smartwatches out there, you might have guessed that the T-Rex 2 looked familiar. While that’s not necessarily a bad thing, the emphasis on the screws and choice of branding makes the watch look a little larger than it could have been. Because of this, it might not be a good option for users with small hands.
Durability is another area where the T-Rex 2 shines. It features 10ATM water resistance and STD-MIL-810G certification, making it a great option for users who love to explore. It can withstand extreme temperatures from -40 degrees to 70 degrees Celsius.
The watch is fairly durable, and we found this after the watch survived a few bumps during our testing without suffering a single scratch.
Amazfit T-Rex 2 – large display and fast GPS
The Amazfit T-Rex 2 has a larger 1.39-inch AMOLED display that is bright enough even in direct sunlight. It’s responsive and users with fat fingers should be able to use it comfortably. The AMOLED display is a big improvement over its predecessor and offers beautiful colors.
Amazfit’s custom Zepp OS has also been refined, both in terms of UI and ease of use – it’s one of the few smartwatch OSes that doesn’t feel clunky and laggy, despite not being WearOS, watchOS, or Samsung’s own implementation run what is now a hybrid of Tizen and WearOS.
In terms of features, thanks to its new biometric sensor, the T-Rex 2 supports heart rate monitoring, blood oxygen saturation and stress levels, among others.
The watch is equipped with a PPG heart rate sensor that can track your blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) and stress level, a key metric for tracking your mental health throughout your hectic day.
One of the highlights of the watch is the dual-band 5-satellite GPS. During my testing, I found the watch to be fairly accurate and able to connect to the GPS quickly. There were no GPS dropouts during my testing, so you don’t have to worry about an inaccurate workout route.
The watch also comes with a compass and barometric altimeter to help determine your location and altitude.
Amazfit T-Rex 2 – performance and battery life
During my testing, I compared the Amazfit T-Rex 2 to a certified pulse oximeter and found that the T-Rex 2’s blood oxygen saturation and heart rate readings were accurate.
The new one-tap measurement function works well and shows your heart rate, stress level, blood oxygen saturation and breathing rate in just 45 seconds, giving you a quick overview of your health status. This allows you to track some of the most important stats throughout the day, spending less than a minute each time. Note that you must remain calm during the test.
The Amazfit T-Rex 2 offers over 150 sports modes and there is something for everyone. It offers common modes like walk, run, treadmill, bike, hike, rower, snowboard, ski and more.
The sleep tracking on the watch works well, providing detailed analysis of your sleep patterns and levels. If you are concerned about your sleeping habits and hoping for more information about it.
One of the most important things to consider when buying a smartwatch is battery life. The T-Rex 2 packs a 500mAh battery that’s said to offer up to 24 days of battery life with typical usage and up to 45 days in battery saver mode.
During my testing, I turned on features like wake-up and changed the heart rate monitoring frequency to 1 minute. With multiple notifications and regular workouts, the watch delivered over two weeks of battery life, which I found to be excellent.
The watch comes with a magnetic stick charger that takes about 2 hours to fully charge the watch.
Zepp is the companion app you need to install to sync your data and manage the watch. It is available for both Android and iOS devices. The app has a clean interface and allows you to easily access your workout data and health information, as well as manage watch settings.
The Amazfit T-Rex 2 is an amazing smartwatch with a wide range of features at an attractive price. The watch scores well in terms of display, battery life, accuracy and being comfortable to wear over a long period of time.
Ultimately, it boils down to whether you’re looking for something with a sporty design. The watch has issues like the bulky design, lack of support for third-party apps, and lack of storage space.
If you’re in the market for a rugged smartwatch with great battery life, the Amazfit T-Rex 2 is an excellent option.
