How to create a black and white image

Here are six methods to convert your color image to black and white.

Method 1: Use grayscale

Photoshop now has a feature that automatically converts your images to grayscale. The problem with this method is that it is destructiveso you cannot adjust the saturation and lightness of each color after conversion.

How to use this function:

  1. Open the color photo you want to convert.
  2. click picture.
  1. click mode > greyscale.
  1. A dialog box opens asking if you want to discard the color information. Choose discard.

Note: You can also access this feature via Characteristics Panel by clicking on the drop-down menu next to it mode and select greyscale.

Method 2: Create a black and white image using the Black and White adjustment layer

The second way to turn an image to grayscale is to use the Black and White adjustment layer. With this method you keep all the color data, which means you can adjust the color values for your desired look. In addition:

  1. Open the image that you want to convert to black and white.
  2. click picture.
  1. Choose adjustments > Black-and-white.
  1. If you are satisfied with the way the picture looks, click on it OK. Otherwise, you can fine-tune the photo by playing with the color sliders.

Method 3: Use Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layers

Using the Hue/Saturation adjustment tool is another non-destructive method that you can use to obtain color data.

  1. Open the color image in Photoshop.
  2. press the adjustments Tab.
  1. Choose Hue/Saturation. This will add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer so your original photo is unaffected (i.e. color data is preserved).

  1. Push the saturation Slider to -100.

Note: The adjustment feature allows you to desaturate each color channel separately to apply a selective color effect to a black and white photo. To do this, simply leave a specific color channel unsaturated (e.g. magenta). Bonus tip, you can use those colour selection tool to automatically select the desired color from part of the image.

Method 4: Use a gradient map

The Gradient Map tool converts color images to grayscale based on lightness values. With this effect, the darker areas become dark gray while the lighter areas become light gray.

How to use this tool:

  1. Open the color image in Photoshop.
  2. Choose layer.
  1. Click in the drop-down menu New adjustment layer > gradient Map.

  1. Open the color image in Photoshop.
  2. Choose layer > New adjustment layer > channel mixer. Alternatively select the adjustments tab and click on the channel mixer Adjustment layer icon.
  1. Tick Monochrome.
  1. Adjust the RGB sliders until you are happy with the effect.
