In addition to the fourth beta versions of iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 released to developers today, Apple has released an ActivityKit beta to allow app developers to start building apps that take advantage of the features introduced in “iOS 16”. introduced “Live Activities” feature.

Announced at WWDC, Live Activity are interactive notifications that stay up to date and allow you to keep an eye on what’s happening in real time right from the lock screen. For example, if you’re watching a sports game, you can see the updated score on the lock screen, or if you’re waiting for an Uber ride, you can wait for your driver to approach.

With the ActivityKit framework, you can start a live activity to share live updates from your app on the lock screen. For example, a sports app may allow the user to start a live activity for a live sports game. Live activity appears on the lock screen for the duration of the game, providing the latest game updates at a glance.

Developers can use ActivityKit to configure, start, update and stop a live activity. According to Apple, an app’s widget extension creates the Live Activity’s UI, but Live Activity isn’t a widget and ultimately uses a different mechanism to get updates.

Apple’s iOS 16 preview page lists Live Activities as a feature that won’t be available when iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 launch, but Apple is allowing developers a head start in adding the experiences to their apps receive. Apple says Live Activity will appear in an update for “iOS 16” due out later in the year.

Developers cannot submit apps that support live activities until the feature rolls out in the future.
