How the Apps UP 2021 winner achieved innovative success and made social impact with Huawei Mobile Services (HMS).
SINGAPORE, July 28, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Plano – a Singapore-based health application that provides technological solutions to improve children’s eye health was the winner of Huawei’s Apps UP 2021 app innovation competition for the “Best Social Impact App” and “Most Popular App” awards. The app has achieved a significant increase in attracting new users by deepening its cooperation with Huawei’s mobile ecosystem.
Plano’s vision is to improve eye health worldwide by empowering parents with the tools to prevent myopia in children. With Plano, parents are equipped with software that detects the distance between a user’s face and the screen, improving eye health and reducing myopia in children. Plano saw Huawei’s technological capabilities and its all-scenario ecosystem as an opportunity to support his vision and embarked on this development journey with Huawei.
Plano’s success course with HMS
Plano was first published on the AppGallery in May 2021 after integrating their app into HMS Core – the Huawei framework for app development. HMS Core has been instrumental in enabling a wide range of app functionality in Plano such as: B. Remote device lock, location tracking, and app or browser blocking.
“What made our life a lot easier when working with Huawei was the different kits available that can be used to enable different features on the operating system. The Machine Learning Kit (ML Kit), for example, enables face-to-screen recognition, which is incredibly important for users to keep their phone at the right distance,” he said Mohammed Diranithe founding CEO of Plano.
After entering the AppGallery, Plano continues to look for improvements to enhance the user experience and boost app growth. The app took the opportunity to participate in Apps UP 2021, the Huawei Global App Innovation Contest, by further integrating with HMS Core kits to unlock more app features and compete for attractive regional prizes.
Plano decided to extend its app services from smartphones to smartwatches to achieve multi-touchpoint presence and serve cross-device users. This is made possible by integrating with “Wear Engine” to make the app compatible with HUAWEI WATCH GT 3 and HUAWEI WATCH 3 smartwatches. With the Watch app, parents can now easily check their kids’ device usage right on their wrist. This helped Plano expand its user base across Huawei’s hardware and software ecosystem while realizing its core vision of providing eye education and awareness in every home.
Plano’s outstanding solutions for maintaining eye health in different scenarios made Plano one of the top winners at Apps UP 2021, winning for itself the awards “Best Social Impact App” and “Most Popular App”.
“The Apps UP competition enables an unprecedented collaboration between app developers and the Huawei mobile services team. This is extremely helpful for developers to get acquainted with the Huawei ecosystem and is an efficient way to gain technical knowledge in a fast-paced industry.” shared Kevin LiChief Technology Officer at Plano.
Use of synergies within the HMS ecosystem
Beyond technological capabilities, Huawei Plano’s comprehensive ecosystem offerings provide continuous business growth. in the Aug 2021, the eye care app conducted a joint marketing campaign with HUAWEI AppGallery to increase awareness and downloads. The campaign leveraged Huawei-owned displayed channels within the AppGallery, resulting in excellent results for Plano. In the first week of the campaign, daily average downloads increased by 8.5x.
Encouraged by the results, Plano continues to forge closer collaborations in the HMS ecosystem. In December, Plano invested in HUAWEI Ads with the aim of increasing reservations on its eye exam platform – planoEyecheck. Leveraging the advertising channels including Petal Search and other third-party apps integrated with HUAWEI Ads, the second campaign increased the platform’s reservation by 15x within the campaign period.
Calling all app developers to participate in the Apps UP 2022 competition
Plano’s success with the HMS ecosystem stems heavily from its focus on app innovation, where Apps UP played a key role in facilitating the process. Now the Apps UP 2022 competition is back this year with the aim to inspire and support developers to adopt HMS Core Kits to create innovative apps.
In the APAC Edition, twenty outstanding apps will be selected based on app design, user experience, ability to innovate, and business value to win from a total prize pool of $200,000. Talented developers from the region only need to submit an app integrated with at least one HMS Core Kit before October 9th to qualify for the competition.
