Spotify has summarily stopped manufacturing the dash-mounted “Car Thing,” its first hardware device, the company announced this week.


The change was announced as part of Spotify’s recent earnings announcement to shareholders, which said the development of Car Thing will cost 31 million euros (approx. ” Spotify tells TechCrunch:

Due to several factors including product demand and supply chain issues, we have made the decision to discontinue further production of Car Thing units. Existing devices work as intended. This initiative has unleashed helpful insights, and we continue to focus on the car as an important place for audio.

Announced last April, the short-lived device first went on sale in the US in February for $89.99. It was designed as an in-car in-dash music and podcast player to provide a more seamless and personalized listening experience, especially in the large number of cars that don’t support modern in-car infotainment systems or Apple CarPlay.

Paired with an iOS or Android device for data and connectivity to the Spotify app, the Car Thing was aimed at Spotify Premium subscribers with these needs, offering a touchscreen, rotary knob for navigation, voice control capabilities and four user-configurable buttons for fast driving Access to areas such as favorite music, podcasts or playlists.
