The following are highlights from this week’s issue of Soccer Mornings in America:

DESHAUN WATSON SUSPENSION

King on Brown’s QB Deshaun Watson’s six-game ban: “The decision of [arbitrator Sue L.] Robinson is surprising in his leniency, but not mind-boggling… The NFL will not consider this fair and I expect the league will appeal Robinson’s decision.”

King on Robinson’s decision: “Robinson concluded that Watson’s pattern of behavior was egregious, but she called it nonviolent sexual behavior. Technically that may be true, but it feels like Robinson is downplaying what happened in these cases.”

King: “Right now the Browns and Watson have to be happy that if that ruling stands, he’ll be eligible to play 11 of 17 games this season. But that’s a pretty big ‘if’.”

PITTSBURGH STEELERS

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin on people doubting Pittsburgh after losing QB Ben Roethlisberger and GM Kevin Colbert: “Bring it on. Quote me.”

Steelers team chaplain and priest Father Paul Taylor on what makes Tomlin a successful coach: “He knows what is important in his job. And he’s such a good communicator. I think he can see inside players’ minds.”

Tomlin on handling the Steelers’ QB fight: “I’m going to talk about the elephant in the room. What is at stake is our ability to put together a winning formula that allows us to go to the stadiums and walk away with a win. I’m not running away from that. I walk to it.”

Peter King on who he thinks the Steelers’ QB will be in Week 1: “From what I’ve found out, opening day surrender is Steelers at the Super Bowl Bengals [Mitchell] Trubiskyto lose.”

Steelers QB Mitchell Trubisky on Tomlin: “Coach Tomlin is very transparent about the situation. Since I’ve been here, it’s really impressive for me how he leads the team as a football coach. He will even tell you. It’s no coincidence that he’s getting the results he’s getting because he’s such a great leader. I’m just trying to absorb all of that knowledge so I can be the best player that I can be and we can keep going out and winning games for the Steelers.

King on Steelers fans’ admiration for rookie QB Kenny Pickett: “Mark my words: Assuming Pickett doesn’t start, the locals will be banging the drum for him very early on if the starter is having trouble.”

NEW YORK GIANTS

King of the Giants list: “This could be the least interchangeable squad in the league – and it could be the one that changes the most over the next two years.”

First-year Giants head coach Brian Daboll on QB Daniel Jones: “He’s tall, he’s strong, he’s athletic, he’s got good mobility. There are many different things you could do with a quarterback like that. We’re still tinkering with things to make sure I want him to share things he’s not comfortable with.”

King on Giants WR Kenny Golladay: “The Giants are waiting to see more of their $18 million free agent in 2021. Kenny Golladay, who doesn’t part well with DBs at camp. This signing looks like a disaster.”

King on Giants RB Saquon Barkley: “I always think his future lies elsewhere … Like so many players on the list, I’m guessing he’s auditioning for 31 other teams this fall as much as he has for the Giants.”

Giants S Xavier McKinney on hiring the Giants this season: “We’ve hit rock bottom… All we can do is go up. The energy is very different in the building. We are finally feeling the family atmosphere that we have been wishing for for a long time.”

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

Similarities between King on Patriots QB Mac Jones and Tom Brady: “In the training I observed with Jones, there was no wasted movement. His mechanics were precise, his confidence evident… His dedication seemed – and seems – so [Tom] brady-like, so made for a Bill Belichick quarterbacks.”

Mac Jones on his mental attitude and work ethic: “You’re always going to get people saying you’re not good enough to do something. I still have so much to prove. I’m always trying to be better than yesterday and better than myself, really.”

    • Watch Now: Click here to watch King’s full interview with Jones at Patriots training camp.

Patriots S Devin McCourty on what he said to Jones: “Whoever you were in high school or college, that guy, bring that guy over here. You don’t have to be this guy or that guy. You just have to be Mac Jones.”

King on who he thinks could lead the Patriots’ offense this season: “I wouldn’t be surprised if Belichick eventually plays a significant role in play-calling.”

NEWS & NOTES

Bill’s QB Josh Allen on the team’s response to the mass shooting at a Buffalo grocery store in May: “It’s something that still feels very, very wrong. Feels very weird. But to make and share this experience, to show our support for the community, we need to keep finding ways to make it more than just a one-time thing. We want to continue showing our support for this community from across western New York.”

King on Tom Brady, who turns 45 this week: “Assuming Brady played Dallas in Week 1, he would be the first non-kicker age 45 or older to play an NFL game in 97 years… In other words, a starting quarterback for a Super Bowl contender, playing at 45 is without precedent.”

King on 49ers WR Deebo Samuel’s contract extension: “I like how it was handled…when [49ers GM John] Lynch made it clear he wasn’t going to trade Samuel and then just let the story simmer for two months, giving everyone involved time to reset and cool off. Good job getting Samuel back and good for Samuel making money after a great season.”

King on Guardian Caps, the foam helmet complement worn by players at training camps: “It’s a good move. I want the players to wear them to every training session, in season and off.”

King on Cardinals QB Kyler Murray’s contract clause stating that he must spend at least four hours a week studying film: “Murray’s reputation has been damaged. And I can’t help but wonder how long it will take to restore the relationship between him and the team.”
